Man steals car with boy inside | News
SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah – A 12-year-old boy who was in the back seat of a car when it was stolen Thursday night spoke to FOX 13 News about the ordeal.
South Salt Lake Police said the car was parked outside a Subway restaurant where the boy’s mother is a manager.
Twelve-year-old Juan Ramirez and his aunt were in the back seat of the vehicle when the boy’s mother went inside the restaurant to attend to a problem with a customer. Juan was asleep.
The troublesome customer was an intoxicated man and was asked to leave the store. He went outside and got into the driver’s seat of the manager’s car.
Juan’s aunt got out of the car to call 911, and the suspect drove away with the boy still in the car.
Juan asked the suspect what he was doing and was told he was going to a motel. He told the man he was going to call the police and pretended to reach for a cellphone in his pocket.
“I was thinking how far it would go and, like, how it would turn out in the end. And then, once he crashed, the guy tried to get out, so I realized ‘What was my mom thinking?’ and stuff. So I started thinking of my mom,” Juan said.
The suspect crashed the car into a parked car near 3100 S State Street. He tried to run away, but police captured him.
Police took Bradley James Kane, 32, into custody in connection with the incident. He faces several charges including driving under the influence, motor vehicle theft, physical endangerment of a child. interference with arresting officer and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.
Juan was not injured in the crash.
